After The Wedding

So much planning goes into the ceremony that after its finished, some things can be easily overlooked. Once you get back to normal life after the wedding and honeymoon, there are several things that need to be done.

Mail Announcements:

You'll want to let your friends and family know of your recent union. In most cases, they'll already know, but this makes it official. Combining this with thank-you notes is a good idea, but be sure to include everyone.

Name Changes:

You'll need to notify banks, credit cards, employers, post office, utilities, schools, car registration, voter registration, and perhaps other companies and organizations of any name change. To change your name, you may need a copy of your marriage certificate, and you will need to request a new social security card, as well as new passports and driver's licenses. You will need to check the rules for your specific state or region. In some cases, the DMV must be contacted first, and in others, the Social Security Office will come first. Make appointments and ask in advance what documents are necessary for the changes.

Thank You Notes:

Be sure to send thank you notes to attendees at your wedding and anyone who sent cards and/or gifts. A special consideration can be made for parents of the bride and groom. Consider sending flowers or a special thank you to each set to thank them for their help and support. Also consider special thanks to members of the wedding party, like the best man, ushers, and bridesmaids.

Return:

Return any rented items, and be sure that all organizations are paid and thanked for their services. It is also customary to send thank you notes to caterers, musicians, and anyone else who helped during the wedding and ceremony.

Wedding Dress & Keepsakes:

Have the wedding dress cleaned professionally and have it properly stored. Do the same with any keepsake items from the wedding. Be sure any wedding photos are properly stored. Other items you may want to keep as mementos include flowers and favors. If you have video footage of the ceremony, it would be a good idea to have copies made and kept in a secure place.

There are a few important matters that must be taken care of, but the important thing to do after the wedding and honeymoon is to enjoy your new life as a married couple. Find your way back to your daily routines and enjoy the companionship and love that marriage brings!
