Make Your Own Fan Wedding Favors

If you are having an outdoors wedding or reception, or your wedding location is without air conditioning (unheard of here in Texas), making your guests a fan wedding favor is a great idea. Instead of making your wedding guests suffer in what could be sweltering heat on your wedding day, pass out these fan wedding favors at the ceremony or the reception, or both as necessary, and you will help keep your guests happy and comfortable for the duration of your wedding.

A fan wedding favor really is incredibly easy to make, and makes not only a unique wedding favor, but a useful one as well. Also, with two different sides to your fan, the combination you use is totally up to you! You can use a cute picture of you two with a romantic verse on one side and the ceremony program on the other, or instead of the program you can have the menu, directions to the reception site, the story of how you met and fell in love, special thanks to those who helped, the possibilities are as wide as your imagination. Heart shapes are the most popular shape of fans for a wedding fan, but you can really choose any shape that you like. Create a layout complete with pictures and design for your fan on the computer, and print it out. Then you can either buy some card stock and print off all the copies you will need on your computer or take it to a copy shop (their printers are better-and don't cost much money) and get all the print outs you need for each side. White is the most popular color for fans, though you can use colored paper to compliment your wedding colors as well which, can be very pretty.

Then, having a pre-made template, cut out all of your pages into the shape you have decided on, and then you can go to work. Grab some paint sticks or buy some other kind of handle like Popsicle sticks or any other decorative thing you can find. (Most stores will give out paint sticks for free though). Spray paint all of the handles white, and then glue the front and back of the fan to the handle with craft glue.Helpful hint, if you glue the stick near the top of the paper of the fan, it will make a sturdier fan.

If the handle you buy is already decorated, then just skip this part. You can decorate the handle of your fan a number of ways. You can tie ribbon or tulle around the base of the handle for decoration, or a group of ribbons with colors that compliment your wedding. Another fun idea is to employ the use of a glue gun to glue buttons, rhinestones, or other decorative sparkles to your fan.

Hip Handmade Memory Jewelry

Projects from the editor of BeadStyle magazine Cathy Jakicic   Hip Handmade Memory Jewelry is one of the newest publications from Kalmbach Books.  Cathy says the idea for Memory Jewelry came after she attended a scrapbook event with a friend of hers. While there, working on a beading project, she began to realize how these 2 creative endeavors were alike. The scrapbooking group was fascinated by her project and how she designed and constructed it.The result is over 25 jewelry creations that are inspired by special occasions, divided into 4 categories: milestones, hobbies, vacations and remembrances. Yes, we all know the endless varieties of charm bracelets and pictures in small frames on pendants and keychains. But Cathy's projects go far beyond these common theme designs.   

MILESTONES  

Be sure you check out the decoupage bracelet; who thought of creating a way to remember wallpaper or paint. The handmade birthstone jewelry was very personal and I liked these much more than pre-made, pre-formed standard pieces.  Yes, the mini memory book pendant was a bit too trite for me, but other scrapbookers might love the concept. Creating beads from special paper, such as gift wrap, or napkins from your baby shower was another neat idea others might like, but not exactly my cup of tea.  Cathy describes a reward bracelet----I liked using this for myself, adding a bead for each POUND lost on my diet, and maybe a slightly larger one for every 5 lbs.  That is a prime example of how you may look at one of her designs and immediately see a new and innovative way to turn it into your own project. 

HOBBIES  

Cathy described a project to commemorate a child's recital....while that didn't particularly appeal to me, it did spark my own creativity, as I thought about how I could take a program and use it to create a memory keepsake. I also like the pop culture project; I may have to use this to create a design for my best friend, who is dedicated movie buff. I could use movie posters and create a unique bracelet and earrings, with a slightly large set for a necklace. I think this could also work for books or album/CD covers. Oh, all of us remember our grade school art work being displayed on the refrigerator door (wonder what they ever did before refrigerators?). Cathy has a neat plan to co-op those into pendants.  

VACATIONS  

I enjoyed the photobook/memory book charm or bookmark project; there would be endless variations on just this project alone! An earlier project showing how to personalize a sports bag or backpack could also be a variation on this theme. Her map bead project was also very original and could be used in many ways to commemorate a trip.  

REMEMBRANCES  

Cathy has different projects with photos, and a piece of cloth from your baby blanket or christening dress. But my fav was one that created a keepsake memory box with an autograph, quote or even haiku, if you wish. And, the baby blanket scrap is just fun and funny.

I thought the way she structured the book into 4 design 'types" was great, since it helped me, at least, to think about the types of events that I might like to commemorate from my own life.  As an example, I have small dried flowers from my husband's grandmother's funeral that I plan to put between microscope slides and solder for pendants for my step daughter, sister in law and mother in law.  No, it isn't the same as some of Cathy's projects, but it is a way to remember someone without being maudlin or dramatic.  I think that is one of the things she accomplishes with her projects; giving us positive, unique ways to keep a special memory "alive."

Well I do hope I didn't spoil all your fun.....if you like creating personal keepsakes, or are a scrapbooker looking to "branch out" this book may be a great place to start. I think these projects would be wonderful to create personalized gifts. College girls, or your younger daughters might enjoy this to create thoughtful gifts that would be cherished but not expensive.  You can find this online at Kalmbach Books.

Creating Baby Book Scrapbooking Memories

A fun and exciting way to create memories is through baby book scrapbooking. This is an excellent way to properly organize and preserve your baby's photos. However, you may be wondering how to create the ideal baby scrapbook. Below are a few simple steps to help you create a unique keepsake album.

1. You will want to begin with a good assortment of photos. Keep in mind that you will want to use the cutest pictures possible for your photo album. 5. The next section should be your baby's first day at home. This page can also include any hospital pictures, as well as his coming home pictures. After The Wedding

So much planning goes into the ceremony that after its finished, some things can be easily overlooked. Once you get back to normal life after the wedding and honeymoon, there are several things that need to be done.

Mail Announcements:

You'll want to let your friends and family know of your recent union. In most cases, they'll already know, but this makes it official. Combining this with thank-you notes is a good idea, but be sure to include everyone.

Name Changes:

You'll need to notify banks, credit cards, employers, post office, utilities, schools, car registration, voter registration, and perhaps other companies and organizations of any name change. To change your name, you may need a copy of your marriage certificate, and you will need to request a new social security card, as well as new passports and driver's licenses. You will need to check the rules for your specific state or region. In some cases, the DMV must be contacted first, and in others, the Social Security Office will come first. Make appointments and ask in advance what documents are necessary for the changes.

Thank You Notes:

Be sure to send thank you notes to attendees at your wedding and anyone who sent cards and/or gifts. A special consideration can be made for parents of the bride and groom. Consider sending flowers or a special thank you to each set to thank them for their help and support. Also consider special thanks to members of the wedding party, like the best man, ushers, and bridesmaids.

Return:

Return any rented items, and be sure that all organizations are paid and thanked for their services. It is also customary to send thank you notes to caterers, musicians, and anyone else who helped during the wedding and ceremony.

Wedding Dress & Keepsakes:

Have the wedding dress cleaned professionally and have it properly stored. Do the same with any keepsake items from the wedding. Be sure any wedding photos are properly stored. Other items you may want to keep as mementos include flowers and favors. If you have video footage of the ceremony, it would be a good idea to have copies made and kept in a secure place.

There are a few important matters that must be taken care of, but the important thing to do after the wedding and honeymoon is to enjoy your new life as a married couple. Find your way back to your daily routines and enjoy the companionship and love that marriage brings!

I got this for my son who's whole theme is "dinosaurs". I was happy to have found a baby book with a little dino on it! This may seem a little expensive for a baby book, beacuse that's what I thought as well. But when I got it, I feel I got my money's worth. There are 80 pages to fill in!! That was a pleasant surprise. There is also stuff in there to fill out that I have never seen in other baby books. This is a very cute dino baby book, my son's theme is dinosaurs, so you can imagine I thought this the perfect baby book to record his milestones in. That said, this book is very long and a bit too specific! I haven't done all of the things the book asks to record, and I hate having empty spaces. Either way it's still a very nice book, just need to make a smaller version of it for those of us that don't do absolutely everything in every tradition!



Great Babybook - Kara Paul - VA
I am extremely picky when it comes to babybooks. It took me about a year to find one I kinda liked for my first child. When I saw this one and looked through it, I fell in love with it. I am also tempted to buy the purple butterfly one and transfer all my daughters stuff to it because I like this one so much.

Deciding on your church wedding decorations takes a lot of time...and a big bite out of the wedding budget! Here are some tips on how to save money by making some of your own decorations.

Wedding Decorations for Church Doors

Church wedding decorations often include hanging something special on the doors. Before you decide to do this, you must check with the church officiant to see if this is permitted. You may be told that it is not allowed to drill holes or any hanging devices that will damage the doors.

Ask if it permissible to use a metal door hanger. They often come in black, silver or gold. If you wish, they are easily painted to match the decor of your wedding. Whether you hang a church door wreath, wedding bows or flower arrangements, keep them on the light side in case the door must be opened or shut during the ceremony. You certainly don`t want something tumbling down on someone's head!

This bride to this wedding wanted to keep the charming rustic flavor the this little country church. I sponge painted metal door hangers with a light green paint, put some cut up OASIS foam in a heavy duty freezer bag (to prevent drips), inserted it into the tins and poked small holes with a floral knife. I then carefully inserted the fresh hydrangeas deep into the foam in the plastic bag.

These were a great favorite with the bride and matched the tin pew decorations and flower girl basket. These were church wedding decorations that the bride could use as a keepsake to adorn her new home with.

Keepsake Christmas Decorations - Part 2 - Picture Christmas Wreath

Christmas memories always include the time I put aside for my children to make Christmas decorations. We love to make wall decorations and have many keepsakes of past Christmases, some 25 years old! Remembering the activities that we shared making the decorations makes the holidays more special as you lovingly place your decorations on the walls. In the last article, Christmas Keepsake Decorations - Part 1, you saw how to make a "Rudolph Handmade Deer", using your child's hand for antlers. A perfect companion keepsake to place beside it is a Picture Christmas Wreath, using your child's picture as the centerpiece.

Materials needed: white poster board, red felt, scissors (both regular and Z edged), glue, green tempera paint, red wooden beads, tape, a protractor or 2 different sized bowls, some newspaper, and a picture of your child. If you can get your child's picture in front of a Christmas tree, then it will really be cute! Doing these kinds of Christmas activities can make a family feel closer and helps make wonderful Christmas memories.

The first thing that you should do is draw 2 circles on the white poster board. The largest should be about 7 or 8". The smaller circle should be 3 & ½ to 4 & ½" and centered in the middle of the larger circle. Let your child help you by cutting out the shapes. Use craft zigzag scissors to cut the outside edge on the larger circle like small Zs. Cutting the inner circle might be hard for children and they may need you to start the cut.

Next, lay down newspapers and let your child paint the larger circle with green tempera paint. It will be cute to see the 'evergreen' look or their brush strokes when it dries. While the paint is drying, take the 3 & ½ " square cut red felt and draw a bow on it. The bow should use most of the square. The bow looks like a butterfly and the ribbon will be like an upside down V, about1" wide and 1" long. You should practice a few times until you get the design you like, then copy to the red felt square, and cut it.

Once the paint dries, you're ready to assemble the wreath. Turn the painted side down and tape the picture over the hole in the middle. Turn it over and check to see if the picture is centered. If the placement is good, then turn it back over and glue the edges to the wreath. Cut a 5" circle from the white poster board and glue it over the picture, on the back.

You are now ready to finish the Christmas wreath. Attach the red bow with glue to the bottom of the wreath. Glue 5 red wooden beads on the wreath, like holly berries. Your child's masterpiece is complete and ready to display alone or with the Rudolph Handmade deer. We enjoy making wall decorations that add Christmas spirit, memories and color to our home. If you and your family enjoyed this activity, then you can always use the remaining supplies to make other wreaths, and give them as Christmas presents from the child or family.
